Ethanol vs Isopropyl Alcohol - Benefits and Differences

These two alcohols work pretty much the same when it comes to disinfectant properties. However, they have slight differences when rubbed on the skin.

Ethanol, the type of alcohol present in alcoholic beverages, works in hand sanitation by denaturing proteins and dissolving lipids, effectively destroying many types of bacterial and viral cells. It is used in hand sanitizers, but it can dry out skin, so it should be used in formulations with additional hydrating agents.

Isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, works in a similar way destroying bacteria and viruses with the same mechanism. However, it is not as effective at dehydrating living tissue, so it is a better solution for disinfecting skin than ethanol. This is why isopropyl alcohol is often used as an antiseptic in hospitals.

So, both alcohols can be used in hand sanitizer formulations, but isopropyl would be a preferable option. Either way, make sure to rub the alcohol while applying to make it more effective.

USP Grade Ingredients

What does USP Grade mean? That certification is given to a chemical grade of sufficient purity to meet or exceed requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). These standards help to assess the quality, strength, identity, and purity of chemical medicines, biologics, food chemicals and ingredients, dietary supplements, among other items. Therefore, USP grade ingredients in hand sanitizer formulation will guarantee a top quality product.

How Much Sanitizer Do You Need?

Many hand sanitizers do not contain sufficient alcohol content, so the first step is to make sure the product has a concentration above 70%. In addition, you have to use enough product to fully coat your hands for proper disinfection. The optimal solution is a dispenser with a spray nozzle, using liquid hand sanitizer. This way the product is spread more uniformly over your hands. Furthermore, liquid sanitizer is more affordable than gel sanitizer, making it the top pick for hand disinfection.
